2015 Favorites by Makena Cummings

2015 was an incredible year. It was my first full year in this whole world of music photography. It was also my first full year in New York City living as a post grad. I can't possibly express how blessed I feel to have had such a wonderful year. That's not to say it had it's downsides...it wasn't all fun and games. But It was certainly a year for the books, full of experiences and growth. It was so fun to look back on this year. Please see my favorite concert photos from the past year. Here's to 2016!

September Shows 2015 by Makena Cummings

September was a ridiculous month for shows. I covered two festivals filled with awesome performers, and traveled to NC and DC for each. In between festivals, I had the chance to see some incredible shows in the city. I still can't believe I got to take photos of The Strokes at Landmark Music Festival. Truly a milestone. See more photos below!

Summer Film by Makena Cummings

I'll be honest, film is a very new thing to me. I wasn't one of those lucky kids who had a darkroom in their high school--though that would've been really cool. I also didn't bother to learn anything about it while in college. I was too focused on figuring out my digital camera and loving the instant gratification. When I moved to New York, I thought I would finally have time to explore this new medium. My mom gave me her old Minolta and I began experimenting. But then the whole concert photography thing took off and I found myself setting the Minolta to the side. It became decoration on my windowsill. This spring, however, I picked it back up. I found a great film shop in the East Village that could make prints for a relatively cheap price. Maybe this would reignite my passion for photos that didn't have dudes playing guitar in them. It's been a really fun exercise, taking photos and waiting to see how they turn out. I know they're not incredible, but it's been a cool learning experience. Here are some photos I took over Labor Day Weekend, soaking up the last days of summer. Enjoy!

August Shows 2015 by Makena Cummings

August was a fantastic month for shows. I got to photograph one of my favorite artists, Mac DeMarco at Webster Hall. It was certainly a life-changing experience and I still catch myself thinking of the beautiful chaos that was that show. I learned about some awesome new bands like Palm, Whitney, and Day Wave. I also got to see some old favorites, like Colony House, Switchfoot, and Needtobreathe. One of the best shows came out of nowhere for me. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah was one of the most enjoyable shows I've been to this year. It was such a wonderful night. The music sounded fantastic and it just hit all the right spots. I also shot my first boy band show, The Vamps with support from The Tide and Before You Exit. Man, those boys had some serious energy. Take a look and enjoy!

Bonnaroo 2015 by Makena Cummings

This past year at Bonnaroo was one of the best ones yet. If you don't know me (or follow me on any form of social media), my whole family -- mom, dad, sister -- goes to Bonnaroo each year. This was our third year attending this incredible festival and we had a spectacular time, though the feel was a little different than years past. The schedule was changed to accommodate what felt like two headliners each night, rather than one solid one. It made things a little confusing, but also led us to go to more late-night shows at the smaller stages.

This was also the first year that the headliners overall just weren't very appealing to us. After living in New York for almost a year before the festival and diving into the indie-rock world, I came with a little more background than I had before. I had a solid idea of who would be the best performers (Mac DeMarco, The Districts, Temples, Courtney Barnett) and really wanted the chance to see newer performers who I had yet to see in the city (Glass Animals, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard). I also had the chance to see some bands I may never have the chance to see again (Earth, Wind & Fire, Belle & Sebastian, Billy Joel). Overall, it was an incredible 4 days and I am already wishing it was June again.

Here are some of my favorite photos I took while at Bonnaroo. Enjoy! (Most of them are of my beautiful sister).

July Shows 2015 by Makena Cummings

In honor of the first day of August, I thought I'd do a little July recap. Last month was absolutely incredible. I've gotten to see some of the best shows of my life and I couldn't be more grateful for all of the opportunities I've been given. Here are some of my favorite shots of the month. As I always say but never seem to actually do, I hope to be posting more often. August is looking to be pretty amazing as well so I'll hopefully have some pretty cool shots to share. Enjoy!

Governor's Ball 2015 by Makena Cummings

I had the chance to cover Governor's Ball for The Wild Honey Pie a few weeks ago. It was the opportunity of a lifetime. I never thought I would get to do something so exciting! I was a little bummed to not get a photo pass, but I had the best time checking out some of my favorite artists and discovering new ones. My entire review is over here on TWHP, but here are some of my photos that didn't get posted.
